Hooray for Judy Mays - The Teacher Parents Tried to Oust Because She Wrote Erotica

Parents who tried to oust a published erotic romance author (9 years) and well-loved teacher (more than 25 years) have seen their cause backfire. The teacher will not lose her job and probably will see a sharp uptick in her book sales.

Common sense and decency have triumphed over small minds!

In an interview with Publisher's Weekly, Judy Barunich (who writes under the pseudonym, Judy Mays, which, by the way, was never revealed to her students), told Publishers Weekly that, "...the entire fiasco backfired on the parents who complained. The support I have received from around the world has been unbelievable. Two complete strangers started a support page for me; and, the last time I checked, it had over 9000 “like” hits. However, it’s been the support from my current students...and their parents that has humbled me and warmed my heart. I was always pretty sure I was respected, but the outpouring of support from “my kids” has brought tears to my eyes...Also, the support of the romance community, both authors and readers, has been overwhelming. So, I want to thank everyone who has joined me on this wild ride from the bottom of my heart..."

  1. I agree, Mick. But as we both know, stupid wins out way too much in this world. It's nice to see the good guy (or woman, as the case may be) win for a change.

  2. This sent shudders down my spine. I have a reason to use a pseudonym as well. Whilst as a Brit I think there is less of that mentality here, I wouldn't like it tested.

  4. It's great to hear she prevailed. I have to wonder what the reaction would have been if she wrote gay romance. My eyebrows are singeing as I think about it. And I'm sure there are gay erotic writers who are also teachers.

Let's hope this serves as a lesson for schools to stay out of the private lives of their staff.

  5. ...especially when those private lives involve doing nothing illegal.

  6. One of my biggest fears....that someday soon Sarah Palin or one of her racist ilk will open their big yaps when they learn how strongly erotica and gay stories sell on the Kindle and other devices, then start a campaign to close down Amazon and e-pubs they think are "devils advocates." It would be the equivalent in their petty little GOP hypocritical minds to book burnin'.

  7. Nice to see intelligence winning over stupid for a change.

  8. Anonymous...it's already happening...with Amazon pulling some yaoi titles and they have tried, unsuccessfully so far, to make some gay fiction titles disappear.

  9. I'm so glad she triumphed over those narrow-minded parents. I talked about Judy on my blog recently in conjunction with how erotica writers are viewed by not only small-minded people, but by some of our fellow writers who think because we write sex that we have no clue how to tell a well-constructed story. Thanks for sharing this.
