New and Notable: SEND LAWYERS, GUNS, AND ROSES by Heloise West

Today, Heloise West drops by to tell us a bit about her incredible new book, Send Lawyers, Guns, and Roses. It's the second novel in the Heart and Haven series released April 19, 2016. This is the sequel to Hitting Black Ice (Loose Id, 12/2014)

All Alex and Hunter want now is a little peace and quiet…

Send Lawyers, Guns, and Roses #2

BLURB
When Hunter and Alex (formally Shawn) are given the vacation of a lifetime, it’s a chance for them to pay attention to romance and get out of the path of danger. The tiny Caribbean island of Saba is gorgeous, the first to have marriage equality, and the Sabans are the nicest people on earth.

There’s lots of rum poolside for relaxing and a room with a mirror on the ceiling for passion. Hot karaoke nights, cold beer, and new friends.

Their new friends Orfeo and Max, and Max’s sister Talisha, share a troubling secret. Alex and Hunter want to help. As a hurricane bears down on them, a dead body surfaces, and a purple backpack loaded with stolen jewels leads a pair of dangerous men to the island.

Alex would rather poke his own eyes out with a pointy stick than call on his old enemy Nick Truman for help; he’d also do anything to keep Hunter out of danger. But even his nemesis can’t reach them now.

Once again, they only have each other to depend on as their paradise is about to become hell on earth.

Hitting Black Ice #1
ER physician's assistant Hunter guards his heart carefully, but that doesn't stop him from falling for Shawn, the front desk clerk.  He keeps his distance from relationships for a reason, but just can't help himself when it comes to Shawn.

Shawn is on the run from the law and love to protect himself and anyone else involved. One man is dead because of him, and his life now is simple and easily thrown into a bag at any hint of danger. Until he meets Hunter, and he no longer wants to run.

Forced into a hostage situation, buried passion explodes in the aftermath, and sex in the supply closet brings their hearts back to life. Tentatively, step by step, they begin to explore a relationship together until the past catches up with Shawn.

FBI agent Nick Truman has finally found his man, but when Shawn escapes, he focuses his attention on Hunter. Shawn returns, even though it means sacrificing himself to save Hunter from the man who framed him for murder.

LOVE STORIES: The Essent Quest by JJ Lore

Welcome to my little exploration of love, how people fall in love, what keeps them together, and what keeps them apart. This week, we have JJ Lore talking about her reaction to Googling a lost love and it's an interesting perspective. And please read on to check out The Essent Quest!

JJ'S LOVE STORY: Googling A Lost Love
I’ve done it, you’ve done it. We’ve all done it: Googled a lost love. I resisted the impulse for years, and I’m not quite sure why I caved, but I did and I’m ashamed to admit it.

My discomfort with experience is probably due to the fact that I don’t retain much affection for past attractions. Give me some time, some wine and I’m ready to move on. There’s no high school sweetheart out there I’d turn my life inside out to reconnect with, no great and sweeping star-crossed love I secretly crave. That’s probably why I write romance, because there’s not too much in my grocery-shopping, caretaking, commuting, laundry-doing, cooking, actual life. I’m the kind of person who carries a first aid kit everywhere, not a mad passion for ‘the one’.

When I decided to check up on a past crush, it was quite out of character for me. I wasn’t interested in this person any more, hadn’t really cared or thought about him in over a decade, so what did it matter? I must have read an article about it, and thought, why not find out what all the fuss is about.

So I opened up that trusty Google home page, typed in the name I hadn’t uttered in many years and hit enter. So much had changed in my life since I’d last seen him. I was a different person, from the way I thought about things to the way I interacted with people. Was I going to regress when I looked over the results? Get all fluttery and start fantasizing about some wild chance encounter? The first couple of listings were not applicable, then there he was on Facebook. I hovered over the link for a long time, but finally ordered myself to plunge ahead and click it. I confess, I did read the bio, and I looked at his profile picture. Then I immediately closed the tab and watched some funny cat videos as a way to mentally wash my hands of the episode.

It turns out, my aversion to looking back held true. Yes, I recognized him, but none of the old feelings resurfaced. All that youthful passion and excitement remained a mere memory and for that I am grateful. I like my life and I love the way it’s heading, so it seems I truly have shed that emotional anchor from the past.

THE ESSENT QUEST
Playboy Tellan knows other races consider his people spoiled and arrogant, but he’s determined to put aside fine sheets and elegant meals in order to search for a mythical Domidian elixir for his ailing sister. He’s also smart enough to realize he’ll need help staying alive in the unsettled wastes of the Empty Quadrant.

Enter Jorant, an intimidating Atavaq who’s been genetically modified to be the perfect soldier. On the run from his past, Jorant accepts the task of protecting Tellan as they venture to a planet populated by tentacled monsters and space pirates. As they search for the potion, Jorant realizes his Domidian client isn’t as helpless as he’d assumed, and Tellan is intrigued every time the taciturn bodyguard speaks. Will their unexpected attraction to each other survive the dangers threatening to destroy them?

ABOUT JJ
J. J. Lore has been interested in the dashing men who roam outer space since she was transfixed by Han Solo piloting the Millennium Falcon a long time ago in a theatre far, far away. Sadly, there is no way for her to join in the fun of intergalactic adventures unless she writes them, so that’s what she does whenever she isn’t taking care of the business of life. If you can’t find her typing madly on her sluggish keyboard, she’s probably poking around in a thrift store searching for the perfect pair of worn jeans or a vintage kachina bolo tie. These days she puts her anthropology degree to work when she whips up dishes from many different cultures, most of which benefit from a liberal dose of sriracha or a smear of green curry paste. Her favorite reading topics are costume history, epidemiology, and permaculture, all of which she’d like to work into a story if she’s suddenly overcome with a brilliant idea someday.

BLURB: Dillon Carter's boyfriend, Marc Francis, is a paid assassin. That little fact makes having a normal relationship very complicated. Especially when there are people out there in the big bad spy world who hate Marc so much the last thing they want is him to end up happy.

Obsessive enemies, ex-lovers and poisoned espresso do nothing to make Marc and Dillon's trip to Italy relaxing. In fact, they'll be lucky if they survive at all.

Excerpt

Of course Ronin had to look like a damned supermodel: raven hair, moss-green eyes, perfect muscular body, and high cheekbones. I hated him immediately. The only redeeming thing was he seemed surprised and disgruntled to see me tagging along with Marc.

Marc smiled warmly at the other man as they bumped fists, and my heart tightened. I’d never seen him smile at anyone but me like that before. With a sinking feeling, I realized he actually liked Ronin. As a person. I hugged my body, feeling like the outsider.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t realize you had anyone with you.” Ronin’s gaze was curious, and I noticed a faint Irish accent.

I’d have been in heaven if Marc had yelled joyfully, Yes, this is Dillon, my one true love. But Marc simply grunted. “This is Dillon.”

My cheeks warmed at the confused scan Ronin gave me. “Hello,” I mumbled.

He held out his tanned hand, and we shook. Of course his skin was smooth and firm. I’d have expected no less from Adonis.

“Julio knows who he is,” Marc said as if that statement should be sufficient. He and Ronin both studied me, and I squirmed in silence.

“Then you had to bring him.” Ronin smiled suddenly, and pretty dimples appeared. He slapped my back, and I tried not to fall sideways from the force. “Welcome.”

Better late than never, I guess.

“Thank you.”

Ronin turned his back on me and leaned in toward Marc. “I didn’t make up the guest room because I thought it was just you.” He laughed, and I imagined he probably winked. “I’ll go do that now.”

Marc cleared his throat. “We’ll both be staying in there.”

Ronin’s smile faded, and he shot me an inquisitive look. “Is that right?”

Nodding, Marc grimaced and gestured to me. “Yeah, uh… We’re together.” It was the first time I’d ever heard Marc say that out loud, and I’d have preferred he sounded happier about it. But I guess it was very awkward to announce that to your ex-lover.

Raising his brows, Ronin froze. “Oh.”

Running his hand around the back of his neck, Marc frowned. “It’s suddenly occurring to me maybe this wasn’t the best idea in the world.”

Ronin crossed his arms in front of his wide chest and sighed. “No. It’s fine.” It wasn’t lost on me that he shot me a vaguely resentful look. “I didn’t realize you were in a relationship.”

“It’s new.” Marc’s tone was brusque.

“Wow.” Ronin rested his hands on his narrow hips. “You’re a secretive bastard.”

“We can find a hotel.” Marc spoke curtly and moved toward the door.

Ronin stopped him by grabbing his elbow. “No. That’s not safe. You’re staying here.”

Marc bit his lower lip. “You sure?” His jaw was tense.

Ronin lifted one shoulder. “You never made me any promises, my friend. I’m honored you thought of me when you needed help.”

“You’re one of the few people I trust.” Marc’s voice was gruff, and his gaze locked with Ronin’s.

“Goes both ways.” Ronin grinned and put his arm around Marc, causing my stomach to churn.
